Ch'eng Ta-wei
In ancient times, in a distant land,
Lived a mathematician, oh so grand!
Cheng Dawei was his name, you see,
A genius with numbers, as clever as can be.
In his youth, he was academically bright,
But he chose a different path, much to our delight.
A sincere Local Agent, he remained,
Yet his love for math could not be contained.
He studied the classics, and ancient writings too,
But arithmetic was where his heart flew.
He traveled to fairs in Wu and Chu,
Seeking books on math, his collection grew.
"Square fields" and "grain with husk removed,"
These were the books he eagerly pursued.
He didn't care about the price,
For knowledge was his truest vice.
He questioned old men, wise and revered,
Learning from their wisdom, never fearing what he'd hear.
Problem by problem, he formed his own treasure,
A compilation of math, beyond measure.
Cheng Dawei, the most illustrious of his kind,
A mathematician with a brilliant mind.
His journey took him far and wide,
Leaving a legacy that will forever abide.
