FuG 215 Neptun
Neptune, oh Neptune, a radar so grand,
In World War II, it helped planes understand,
A code name it had, a secret to keep,
Low-to-mid VHF band, it would leap.
Airborne intercept, it was designed to be,
A targeting device, for planes flying free,
With "V/R" attached, a warning it gave,
Forward and backward, it helped pilots behave.
Working in metres, it scanned the sky,
A stop-gap solution, as time passed by,
Until SHF-band devices were found,
FuG 240 Berlin, radar renowned.
Transceiving antennas, they were quite unique,
Hirschgeweih they used, like a stag's antler peak,
Eight-dipole array, shorter elements they'd find,
For twin-engined night fighters, it was designed.
But an experimental fitment, they did try,
A Yagi-based Morgenstern, reaching for the sky,
Twin elements crossed, at a perfect ninety,
A single-mast-mounted array, oh so mighty.
Neptune's radar dance, a tale to be told,
Of German ingenuity, brave and bold,
In World War II, it played its part,
Guiding planes with precision, from the start.
