In a world of genes, there's one so grand, GDF5 is its name, you'll understand. It's a protein, you see, encoded by a gene, Helping our bodies, like a magical machine. GDF5 is part of the BMP family, A group of proteins, oh so fancy. With seven cysteine residues, so rare, It helps our cells grow and differentiate with care. From the moment we're born, and as we grow, GDF5 plays a role, this we know. It shapes our bones, making them strong, And helps our joints, where they belong. But GDF5's talents don't end there, In the central nervous system, it has a share. It helps neurons survive, oh so true, And in Parkinson's disease, it offers a clue.
