HBGF1
In a world of proteins, so grand and vast,
There's one called FGF-1, a growth factor that lasts.
It's encoded by FGF1, a gene so fine,
Creating a protein that's simply divine.
A polypeptide, with 155 amino acids so neat,
Matures into a protein, small and sweet.
Non-glycosylated, it weighs 17-18 kDa,
FGF-1, oh how it likes to play!
Discovered in 1975, purified with care,
FGF-1, a protein beyond compare.
Others found it too, under different names,
Acidic FGF, Heparin-binding, all part of the game.
No signal sequence, it's not secreted the usual way,
Instead, it forms a dimer, ready to play.
With proteins at the cell membrane, it takes flight,
Flipping through the membrane, oh what a sight!
Once in the tissue, it dissociates with glee,
Becoming monomeric, setting itself free.
Binding to heparan sulfate proteoglycans with grace,
FGF-1, exploring the extracellular space.
So remember, little ones, the tale of FGF-1,
A whimsical protein, full of fun.
It binds to receptors, both outside and in,
A growth factor's journey, a magical spin.
