Hbgf1
In a world of proteins, so grand and vast,
There's one called FGF-1, a growth factor blast!
Encoded by FGF1, a gene so fine,
It helps cells grow, oh how divine!
A polypeptide it is, with 155 amino acids,
And when it matures, it's a protein that entices.
Non-glycosylated, it weighs 17-18 kDa,
FGF-1 is ready to make cells sway!
Back in '75, it was first purified,
But soon others found it, they couldn't hide.
Different names they gave, but all the same,
Acidic FGF, growth factor with fame!
No signal sequence, FGF-1 has a unique way,
Not secreted through pathways, it doesn't obey.
Inside cells, it forms a dimer, oh so clever,
With proteins at the membrane, a bond to sever!
Once outside, it dissociates, becoming monomeric,
Entering circulation, its effects are atmospheric.
Binding to FGFR, a receptor so dear,
FGF-1 helps cells grow, bringing cheer!
