Hvare Khshaeta
In ancient times, so long ago,
A divinity began to glow.
Hvare-khshaeta was its name,
The Radiant Sun, a fiery flame.
Hvar, the sun, shining so bright,
With xšaēta, radiant light.
Avestan language, it did speak,
A yazata, strong and unique.
From Proto-Indo-Iranian, it came,
SúHar, the sun, its ancient name.
In Vedic Sanskrit, Surya it became,
A powerful deity, known by the same.
Middle Persian, a contraction made,
Khwarshēd, the name, it would trade.
In New Persian, Khurshēd it grew,
Khorshīd, shining bright and true.
The 6th Yasht, a hymn so sweet,
Dedicated to Hvare-khshaeta's feat.
The Sun's litany, in the Avesta's embrace,
A day on the calendar, it does grace.
Though Mitra would rise, the Sun's new face,
Hvare-khshaeta's domain, it did not erase.
Distinct from the divinity of "Covenant" it remains,
The Radiant Sun, forever it reigns.
Across the lands, a tale did spread,
Of Hors, the Slavic deity it said.
Etymologically related, some would claim,
Introduced by Persian armies, a solar flame.
