INA § 101(a)(43)(L)
In the land of immigration law,
There lived a term that made hearts sore,
Aggravated felony, it was called,
For aliens seeking a future, enthralled.
It carried consequences, severe and grave,
For those seeking asylum, it was a wave,
Legal resident status, citizenship too,
Avoiding deportation, it was their cue.
Convicted of this felony, oh what a plight,
For twenty years they must stay out of sight,
From the date of deportation, they must wait,
To re-enter the U.S., it's a lengthy fate.
But the Supreme Court stepped in one day,
In Sessions v. Dimaya, they had their say,
The residual clause, they ruled it vague,
Limiting the term, like a bird in a cage.
When first added in '88, it was small,
Just murder and drugs, that was all,
But AEDPA and IIRIRA came along,
Expanding the category, oh so strong.
Crimes related to gambling, passport fraud too,
A great many more crimes, they did accrue,
Sentences of at least a year, suspended or not,
The category grew, a tangled knot.
So remember, dear children, the tale of this term,
Aggravated felony, a lesson to learn,
In the world of immigration law, it's clear,
The consequences of actions can be severe.
