Iacobus de Oudenaerde
James of Hesbaye, a musical knight.
With quill in hand and notes in sight,
He compiled a treatise, a musical delight.
But his true name, he hid away.
The Speculum musicae, his grand display,
The longest work on music, to this day.
Each one a gem, a treasure to behold.
An acrostic of his name, a secret code,
IACOBUS, the letters beautifully composed.
Before returning to Liège, his heart's concern.
Completing his treatise, his knowledge did burn,
To share with the world, for all to discern.
With arguments strong, he reached for the sky.
Rhythmic innovations, he did decry,
James of Hesbaye, a musical ally.
