Ixerba
In New Zealand's land, so far and wide,
There grows a tree with leaves so wide.
Ixerba brexioides, its name so grand,
With serrated leaves, like a green hand.
Bushy and tall, it stands so strong,
With dark green leaves, where birds belong.
Panicles of white, with hearts so green,
Flowers that bloom, a beautiful scene.
The fruit it bears, a green capsule tight,
Splitting open, a wondrous sight.
Black seeds peek out, with a scarlet hue,
Against the white fruit, a vibrant view.
Tawari, they call it, in Māori's tongue,
A name so lovely, like a sweet song.
Whakou it becomes, when flowers bloom,
A name that dances, in nature's room.
Endemic to the North Island's embrace,
Ixerba brexioides, a tree of grace.
Let's celebrate this tree so rare,
With its beauty and wonder, beyond compare.
