Rdtsc
In the land of processors, oh so grand,
There's a special register, you must understand.
It's called the TSC, so neat and fine,
Counting CPU cycles, oh how divine!
When the Pentium arrived, it brought the TSC,
A 64-bit register, for all to see.
RDTSC is the instruction, you see,
Returning the TSC in EDX and EAX, with glee.
In x86-64 mode, a feature so cool,
RDTSC clears the upper 32 bits, no fool.
With opcode 0F 31, it's a magical spell,
Counting cycles, oh how well!
But beware, dear friends, of the Cyrix chip,
For their 6x86, the TSC may skip.
Considered illegal, RDTSC won't do,
But fear not, for Cyrix had a TSC too!
In their MII, a Time Stamp Counter they had,
Counting cycles, just like the fad.
So remember, little ones, as you learn and play,
The TSC counts cycles, every single day!
