YK Delta
In Alaska's land, where rivers flow,
The Yukon and Kuskokwim go,
They meet the sea, with a mighty roar,
Creating a delta, like none seen before.
A land so vast, it's hard to believe,
The Yukon-Kuskokwim, it does achieve,
One of the largest deltas, it proudly stands,
Bigger than Mississippi's, across many lands.
Protected and cherished, a refuge it's called,
The Yukon Delta, where nature is enthralled,
Tundra stretches far, as far as the eye can see,
A home for wildlife, where they roam wild and free.
In this great delta, people reside,
Around twenty-five thousand, side by side,
Alaska Natives, Yupik and Athabaskan too,
Living in harmony, with the land they knew.
Bethel, the heart, the city so grand,
With six thousand residents, it does command,
Surrounded by villages, forty-nine in all,
Each with a story, waiting to be recalled.
A subsistence lifestyle, they proudly embrace,
Hunting, fishing, gathering with grace,
The delta provides, their needs it fulfills,
With nature's abundance, it's a land of thrills.
No roads to travel, no cars to be found,
Bush planes take flight, above the ground,
Riverboats in summer, snowmachines in the cold,
These are the ways, their stories unfold.
In Bethel, a place where justice is sought,
The Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center is brought,
A reminder that even in a land so serene,
There's a need for balance, to keep the slate clean.
So let's celebrate the Yukon-Kuskokwim's tale,
A delta so grand, where stories prevail,
With nature's wonders and a vibrant community,
Alaska's treasure, for all to see.
